St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation 2022

Father Gregory is very pleased to announce that Bishop Leonard Blair has awarded the St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation to Trudy and Gary Higgins of the St. Anthony parish family.

The medal is awarded to parishioners who are over the age of fifty years and who have shown a long and committed devotion and service to our parish. Pastors and Archbishop Blair know they can’t run their parishes without the hard work of their parishioners. Each year Archbishop Blair asks pastors to submit the name of individual who have demonstrated that commitment. Last year 130 people received the award at a special Mass attended by over 100 priests.

When Trudy and Gary Higgins moved to Prospect 24 years ago they joined the St. Anthony Parish and Trudy immediately joined the Ladies Guild. She loved the connections she made so she has continued as a member and has served as President of the Guild.

The Ladies Guild has been a major contributor to our parish family in time, talent and fundraising. Each year they run a Christmas Bazaar, making Christmas baskets for auction. When the pandemic broke out the members sewed hundreds of masks for our church mask campaign. This year they are joining with the Knights of Columbus to host a Lenten Fish Fry. Later In May they will participate in the Town Wide Tag Sale. And these are just a few of the projects they have been involved in.

Trudy has also served on the parish Hope Ministry, as a catechist for the 4th and 5th grade, volunteers at the St. Vincent DePaul Kitchen each week, and used to volunteer in the Pumpkin Patch.

Gary has been instrumental in facilitating the Protecting God’s Children program for St. Anthony Church and other area churches in the area. Protecting God's Children® for Adults is training conducted by VIRTUS® certified facilitators on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The training makes participants aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse, and five easy steps one can use to prevent child sexual abuse. Two videos are the centerpiece of the training: A Time to Protect God's Children™ and A Plan to Protect God's Children™. The facilitators incorporate policies and procedures

into the training defining child sexual abuse, addressing the reporting of child sexual abuse, the screening and selection of employees and volunteers, and victim advocacy.

Gary has also served as an usher at Mass for St. Anthony Church for many years.
