Baptism

Water poured over or immersed in water while saying, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

The first of the seven sacraments, and the “door” which gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist constitute the “sacraments of initiation” by which a believer receives the remission of original and personal sin, begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit, and is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ. The rite of Baptism consists in immersing the candidate in water, or pouring water on the head, while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptisms at St. Anthony Church take place during any Mass or following the 11:15 Mass on the 1st or 3rd Sundays of the month.

  • Baptisms during Mass are joyful events and a wonderful addition to the Sunday Liturgy. Having the entire faith community present to welcome our newest member, is a real honor.  For all those who participate, it is an opportunity to renew our own baptismal promises and be reminded of our sacred duty and mission to live faithfully as disciples of Jesus Christ. When a baptism is celebrated during Mass, certain parts of the Mass change, so the length of the Mass is not much different.
  • At St. Anthony Church, it’s our wish that all children be baptized and raised in the faith. We would like to assist parents on this journey. In 2008 we revised our baptismal program to one that includes a Baptismal Ministry team that works with the parents and godparents. Those wishing to have their child baptized are asked to call the Parish Center well in advance and speak with Lisa at ext. 10.

  • Adults who have not been baptized are welcomed and encouraged to contact Deacon Domenic at 203-758-4056.
